Swedish psychedelic-ambient pioneers Carbon Based Lifeforms deliver a deep, atmospheric remix of ‘Vlorë’, taken from London-based producer PROFF’s debut album, ‘Missing Places I’ve Never Been’.

Active since 1996, Carbon Based Lifeforms are widely regarded as trailblazers of the psychill and psychedelic ambient movement. The Swedish duo have released a series of influential albums on Ultimae Records, building a global following through immersive sound design, extensive touring, and a long-standing presence across the ambient and downtempo scenes. Reflecting on the remix process, they explained:

“We really liked the track, and it meshed well with our sensibilities, lending itself naturally to the CBL treatment. We were in a pretty groovy mood, so we re-quantized the stems to introduce some swing. After playing around with a few ideas, we landed on a very dubby bassline made with a SID6581 sound chip. It has an enormous low end, but it’s quite noisy and loose in terms of timing, so we processed it through an external filter and then gated it to really tighten it up.”

Moving away from the traditional rules of dance music, PROFF’s album marked his first foray into downtempo territory, exploring slower tempos and richly textured, atmospheric soundscapes influenced by ambient and psychedelic chill music.

Citing Carbon Based Lifeforms as a key inspiration for the album, the remix brings the journey full circle with their reworking of PROFF’s 'Vlorë', out now on Anjunachill.
